Book
Hardcover. Condition: NF. No Jacket. Engravings (illustrator). Facsimile Reprint. First published in 1861, after the authors, Samual Carter Hall and his wife Anna Marie, had travelled through South Wales, the River Wye and the coastal areas. Segments of that book had earlier appeared periodically in the "Arts Journal" with that materia being "carefully revised and much enlarged," according to the introduction to the first edition. Robert Harris, who was familiar with the Walsh regions covered in the book, and its appeal to tourists had earlier produced a facsimile edition of another book by the Halls, "The Book of the Thames." He was able to obtain an original copy of the "Book of South Wales." to reproduce it in this facsimile reprint, first in a standard form in 1979, also a leather bound limited edition. The result is a book of the highest production standards, which will bring pleasure as well as historical information to today's traveller and to those with a special interest in the South Wales area. This copy from the standard edition of 1979, published for Robert Harris by Charlotte James Publishers, the facsimile text block runs to 512 pages, preceded by 12 preliminary pages, illustrated throughout with excellent wood block engravings, some of full page but most intext, frontis of two maps, with few other maps, plans, diagrams etc. V G+ brown hard covers have gilt titles/decorations to spine strip, gilt decoration to front board and colour tone e/papers, text block is NF, signed in ink by the reprint publisher "R A Harris" on the Preface. (The engravings were taken from the work of eight artists and these exceptional illustrations are a memorable feature of the book.). By Reprint Instigator.
