First Edition
Hardcover. First Edition. Folio, two volumes: half-title, engraved title page, title page, [8, dedication], [18, lectori], [2, enumeratio nummorum], 184 plates + title page, 664, [35, indices] p. In a modern brown morocco over marbled paper binding, with amber morocco spine labels, decorative gilt stamping, and marbled endpapers. A bit of toning to the contents, more so to the prefatory and concluding leaves, with some occasional soiling and foxing. The spines are lightly sun faded. Morell (1646-1703) was employed by Louis XIV as Keeper of the Royal Coin Cabinet. Not only was he an accomplished Swiss numismatist and engraver, he was also an exceptionally gifted scholar and designer. He set himself the task of cataloging and engraving all ancient coins in the principal European cabinets. At the time of his death, this was not completed (three additional volumes were published in 1752). The commentaries in his Thesauri are the work largely of Havercamp, Gori, and Schlegel, based on Morell's original designs.
