Ebd., Seiten unaufgeschnitten, angestaubt. - Moleschott, (1822 - 1893), besuchte 1838-42 das Gymnasium in Kleve. Früh mit Hegels Lehren vertraut, befaßte er sich später mit David Friedrich Strauß und Friedrich Theodor Vischer und studierte 1842-45 Medizin in Heidelberg bei Friedrich Tiedemann, Leopold Gmelin und Jakob Henle. Er übersetzte Arbeiten des Physiologen Gerardus Johannes Mulder ins Deutsche und gewann mit der Schrift Kritische Betrachtung von Liebig s Theorie der Pflanzenernährung (1845) einen Preis der Teylerschen Gesellschaft. Mit De Malpighianis pulmonum vesiculis (1845) wurde er bei Henle promoviert. Mit Franciscus Cornelis Donders forschte er in Mulders chemischem Laboratorium und gründete mit Donders und Isaac van Deen die Zeitschrift "Holländische Beiträge zu den anatomischen und physiologischen Wissenschaften" (1846-48). 1847 wurde er Privatdozent für Physiologie in Heidelberg. Bedeutende Schriften entstanden, beeinflußt von Ludwig Feuerbachs Religionskritik, der seine Nahrungsmittellehre mit dem geflügelten Wort rezensierte: "Der Mensch ist, was er ißt". Er vertrat neben Ludwig Büchner und Carl Vogt den physiologischen Materialismus als freigeistige Volksaufklärung. Alle Lebensvorgänge wurden (gegen Justus von Liebig) durch chemischen Stoffwechsel ohne besondere "Lebenskraft" nur mittels "Kraft und Stoff" erklärt, seelische Vorgänge ("ohne Phosphor kein Gedanke") und der Wille als determinierte Gehirnzustände. Wegen Eintretens für die Leichenverbrennung zwecks Rückführung der Asche als Düngemittel in den Kreislauf erfolgte 1854 eine Verwarnung vom Rektor der Universität ("unsittlich und frivol"), weshalb er auf sein Lehramt verzichtete, aber weiterhin forschte, praktizierte und sich für Georg Forster begeisterte. Gegen Widerstände wurde er 1856 als Prof. der Physiologie nach Zürich berufen (Antrittsrede: Licht und Leben, 1856, (3)1879), 1861 als Prof. der Physiologie nach Turin, wo er 1866 die italienische Staatsbürgerschaft erhielt und sich 1867 für die Aufnahme von Julius Robert Mayer in die Akademie einsetzte. Für seine Verdienste wurde er 1876 zum Senator des Königreiches Italien ernannt, 1878 als Prof. der Physiologie an die Sapienza in Rom berufen und 1892 mit dem Zivildienstkreuz für seine Leistungen in Wissenschaft und Politik geehrt.
