Text block edges and endpapers toned. Previous owner's name and gift inscription, dated 1878, inked on front free endpaper. Page margins aging, occasional faint spotting, the odd smudge mark, central signature a little loose. A copy in no better than fair condition but remains complete and readable. A good reference/working copy of this now scarce title. Richard Turrill McMullen recounts his sailing alone and the sea and psychological challenges he faced.

Reprint. Octavo-size paperback. Small ownership signature on a prelim page, a small mark on the fore-edge, o/w fine in wrappers, illustrated for this edition with a superb painting by maritime artist, Geoff Hunt. The author was a pioneer among amateur small-boat sailors, and this sailing classic was first published in 1869. This edition include a 10 page introduction by Arthur Ransome (from the 1949 edition) as well as an author preface, from the 1891 edition (McMullen died peacefully at sea the same year).
