Grey cloth covers with gold gilt lettering on spine. One small bump on front edge of front cover. Interesting bookplate of previous owner is neatly pasted on the inside front cover and his name is neatly written on the top edge of the ffep. Text is clean and unmarked. Hinges are tight. Illustrated dj has small tears, chips and soiling to edges, corners and spine ends. Moderate shelf wear and soiling to covers and spine. Written by McKinney who for many years was Superintendent of Indian Affairs at Washington and toured the Great Lakes of the West and lived with the Native Americans. He joined with Lewis Cass, Governor of the Territory of Michigan to bring into being the Treaty of Fond du Lac which he writes about in this book. Thomas McKenney (1785-1859) was first appointed in 1816 to Superintendent of Indian Trade and then Superintendent of Indian Affairs from 1824-1830. He is best known for his magnum opus: "History of the Indian Tribes of North America" which was co-authored with James Hall and released from 1836-1844. Prior to that work, he wrote the "Tour to the Lakes" which was first published in 1827. In 1826 he traveled in company with Lewis Cass, Gov. of Michigan through the Great Lakes, and describes the journey as well as Indians met along the w, their customs, etc., and the the treaty negotiations between the United States and the Chippewa, Menominee and Winebago tribes. Original gray cloth publisher's covers with spine gilt spine lettering. There is a large previous owner name on the front paste-down and three pages are dog eared, else this is a clean, tight, and unmarked book. It was issued in an edition of 1,500 copies.
