Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Justin McCarthy (22 November 1830 24 April 1912) was an Irish nationalist and Liberal historian, novelist and politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1879 to 1900, taking his seat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. At first he was a member of the Home Rule League, sitting in support of Charles Stewart Parnell (The Parnellites) ; Later he was associated with the anti-Parnellites (The Irish National Federation), but he was always a stanch, temperate and steady supporter of Ireland. ***************************** This book of letters, interspersed with Mrs. Praed's commentary, covers much of the nineteenth century - politics , travel, social goings on. they knew and were associated with, and met many of the leading luminaries of that century (political, social and literary); the book is valuable for that, and well worth reading for the very elegant literary style, which builds intrinsic sympathy and interest that abounds in fascinating events. They saw much, thought much . and talked about it all, including Irish politics. ************************************** Mrs. Praed was a very popular and prolific author in her own right (47 titles, fiction, nonfiction, and poetry). She is considered to be the first Australian woman author to receive international acclaim. Born and raised in Australia, she spent most of her adult life in England and Europe. But her own books were about Australia, and her memories of living there, not as a rich person, but as the daughter of a postmaster; they lived in various 'stations away from major urban centers. She witnessed violence toward the native Aboriginal natives, but remained quite sympathetic to their plight. They figured positively in many of her stories, as she pleaded for justice and racial equality for them - she considered the Aborigines her friends. **************************** If you wish to delve into a book that is rich, politically, socially, and literarily - this large volume, "Our Book of Memories" will keep you interested for a long time (or not - if you are a fast reader ). Some excellent full page portraits and photographs, and one facsimile of a letter grace the text; a mezzotint engraving of Justin McCarthy photogravure frontispiece of Justin McCarthy. This is the First American Edition, published by Small, Maynard and Company in 1912. **************************** TITLE : Our Book of Memories : Letters of Justin McCarthy to Mrs. Campbell Praed / AUTHOR : Justin McCarthy (1830 - 1912) ; Mrs Campbell Praed (Rosa Campbell Praed , née Murray-Prior; 1851 1935) / ILLUSTRATIONS : Photographs and Gravures, and on facsimile Letter / IMPRINT : Small Maynard and Company / PLACE : Boston. / DATE : No date [ but 1912] / EDITION : First American Edition / STATUS : OP [available supposedly as POD issues] / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Thick octavo trade hardcover; has 10 illustrations , including an engraved frontispiece portrait with tissue guard; has an Introduction, an appendix, and an Index; 463 pages; 5 1/2" x 8 5/8"; dark blue cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on spine and front board; front board has a simple, blind-stamped line border. lettering on front board is a facsimile of hand-written script, with, also, facsimile signatures reproduced at the bottom of the board. Text block has rough-cut fore-edge and bottom edge. ***************************************** CONDITION - GOOD PLUS - This is a previously owned book that has seen some wear, but which remains clean and presentable, with the following imperfections and particulars :: EXTERIOR -- Spine extremities are compressed and display abrasion and small tears; head of spine spreads a bit; gilt lettering is somewhat dulled; gilt lettering on front board is bright; surface rub on front board is negligible; rear board has a fairly extensive, but rather transparent water stain (visible at some angles, less so from others - hence the condition grade); bottom edges of boards have modest shelf rub; corner tips are softly bumped; top edge of text-block is age and dust-darkened. / BINDING -- Still pretty solid - no detached or loose leaves (it's a heavy book , weighing in at almost 2 1/2 pounds). / INTERIOR -- There is a mark at the center of the front paste-down where a bookplate had been - the area there on makes it obvious that the plate just came loose, as there is no detritus as would be if the plate had been removed. The front end-papers are toned and the rear end-papers are toned and foxed. At the bottom hinge corner is a small book shop label : "Chas. W. Clark Co. / Booksellers/ 128 W. 23rd St., New York). The interior paper is a bit toned, else clean and free of marking. the book has been read, as witness the many separated bolts - the separation was done fairly carefully. All in all the interior is nicely preserved, and quite presentable.
