  • Wien, Joseph Gerold, 1784. Small 8vo (18.1 x 10.4 cm). Title page with finely engraved vignette, [xiv], 212 pp., two leaves with handwritten index. Original boards. Spine with small red morocco label with gilt borders and title. = A unique copy of a rare work by the Austrian botanist Franz Joseph Märter (1753-1827). Interleaved, with several extensive notes written in an old hand. Most likely these notes were made by a Mr Petermann, whose name is carefully written on the front pastedown. This could be the German botanist Wilhelm Ludwig Petermann (1806-1855), who wrote "Das Pflanzenreich in vollständigen Beschreibungen aller wichtigen Gewächse dargestellt und durch naturgetreue Abbildungen erläutert" (1847) and several other botanical works. Stafleu and Cowan do not quote this edition and in fact no edition with this title. They list only two copies of the first edition, with the title ''.östreichischen Baume." (1781); and one of the third (1796) edition. Lower half of the spine cover missing, otherwise a very good, unique copy. Stafleu and Cowan, 5218.
