Published by Order of the United States Military Philosophical Society. Bookplate of War of 1812 and Black Hawk War veteran, U.S. Representative for New York, and official pallbearer at President Harrison's funeral, Daniel Greene Garnsey. 8vo. pp. [2], 6, (5)-340. [Sabin 43611]. The author, Alexander Macomb (1782-1841), was one of the first officers to receive formal training at West Point. He won acclaim during the War of 1812 as brigadier general in command of the Right Division of the Northern Army, responsible for defending the frontier of northern New York. In 1828, he was promoted him to Commanding General of the Army by John Quincy Adams, a position which he held until his death in 1841. This copy belonged to Daniel Greene Garnsey (1779-1851), who served in the War of 1812 as aide-de-camp to major general with rank of major. Garnsey was a native of Canaan, New York and, following a private school eduction, joined the militia in 1805, serving as brigade inspector in Saratoga County 1810-1811. He was admitted to the bar in 1811 and practiced law in Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties. Following the War if 1812, he labored as a pioneer citizen of the Lake Erie village of Dunkirk, New York. He then served as district attorney of Chautauqua County 1818-1826, and was elected as an Adams candidate to the U.S. House of Representatives 1825-1829. After relocating to Michigan in 1831, he served with General Winfield Scott in the Black Hawk War of 1832. Garnsey was an official pallbearer at President William Henry Harrison's funeral in 1841.
