Softcover. Condition: Good. 1st edition thus. "Paperback book condition: good. Red covers with illustration of a barbarian on horseback wielding a sword good with some tanning at spine; binding sound; spine shows slight creasing; pages good to very good but with a few notes here and there. 407 pages text, 33 pages Bibliography and Additional Bibliography, and 17 pages Index; 8 X 5.5 X 1; 1 lb. 6.5 oz. shipping weight. It is essential to recognize that much of the "decline and fall" described in Lot's book is something peculiar to the western portion of the Roman Empire and involved much more than barbarian incursions and invasions. Lot's classic work addresses problems in Roman political institutions which became apparent a good deal earlier than the political-military crises of the fourth and fifth centuries CE. It is also good to remember that while the West was suffering crippling economies, crises in revenue collection, and deterioration of security all along the Rhine-Danube frontier, the eastern half of the empire was getting along, if not swimmingly, then in a manner that at least surpassed bare survival. And the Eastern Roman Empire did survive the demise of the Western Empire by a thousand years. Size: 8 X 5.5 X 1". book.
