The Marquis of Hastings, or Lord Rowdon, was among the first British officers sent to America after the infamous Boston Tea Party. He would serve throughout the War of Independence during which time he gathered from British engineers various sketches of scenes and events of his experiences. This article reviews eight such sketches and the significance of the subject-matter during the war. Sketches include a view of Boston seen between Castle William and Governor's Island, the burning of Charlestown, Bunker Hill after the battle, New York with the entrance of the North and East Rivers, the English church built at New York, and Careening Place. Housed in protective mylar report cover with spine sleeve.
