'Helen Lemmens-Sherrington(1834-1906) was an English concert and operaticsopranoprominent from the 1850s to the 1880s. Born in northern England, she spent much of her childhood and later life in Belgium, where she studied at theBrussels Conservatory. After engagements in mainland Europe she made her London debut in 1856. Her singing career was mostly in concert, but in the first half of the 1860s she appeared in opera atCovent Gardenand other leading London theatres.After she retired from performing, Lemmens-Sherrington became a teacher, at her old music college in Brussels, and at theRoyal Academy of Musicin London and theRoyal Manchester College of Music.' 6.2 x 8.6cm portrait on 6.3 x 10.2cm card with facsimile signature below. The same carte-de-visite in the National Portrait Gallery's Photographs Collection (ref. NPGx11863) dates it to 1867. A very nice condition item, with firm sharp corners, having a surface crease top left from where the image was laid onto the card, and a couple of foxing spots at the top. Albumen print photograph, carte de visite format, 64 x 105 mm (mount), verso with the imprint of the London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company; the print has a short surface scratch at left hand edge, but is otherwise in good condition, as is the mount; accompanied by a section from the original album mount, inscribed in pencil in a later 19th-century hand 'Dr. Livingstone's funeral [sic] Sir W. Buller chief mourner'. SirWalterLawryBullerKCMG (1838-1906), lawyer and naturalist, was the dominant figure in the field of New Zealand ornithology in the nineteenth century. In this photograph, which shows African explorer and missionary Dr. David Livingtone's coffin lying in state at the Royal Geographical Society in April 1874, prior to his funeral service at Westminster Abbey, Buller is seen at far left. Provenance: from a family photograph album compiled by a female member of the family of John Sperry (1829-1890), Lands Commissioner, who was the father of New Zealand artist Eleanor Kate Sperry (1862-1893). The Sperrys were closely connected with the Buller and Mair families.

E. Transcept, and Australian Gold Case; under magnification, the sign on the case reads: The Stamping Machine / Victoria - Australia / GOLD / Eastern Annex; both of the prints and the mount are in fine condition. One of a series of views of the display of gold from the Colony of Victoria at Crystal Palace in 1862, published by the exhibition's official photographers, theLondon Stereoscopic and Photographic Company. A different photograph taken from the same vantage point includes a diorama with wax figures, illustrating men at work on the diggings. The centrepiece of the Victorian display (also not shown in this particular view) was a 44 feet high gilded obelisk, a symbol of the enormous quantity of gold which had been mined in Victoria in the ten years or so since the gold rush had commenced.
