Published by Racial Purity Committee [194-], St. Louis
Signed
A circular letter and petition from the Racial Purity Committee, which was formed by Gerald L. K. Smith acolyte Donald Lohbeck in St. Louis to push for a city ordinance to legally separate the races. As he explains in the circular: "The enclosed Petition and circular speak for themselves. If you are interested in the future of St. Louis, the safety of your children and the preservation of their self-respect, you owe it to yourself and your community to circulate the enclosed Petition. If we can get 20,000 names of registered voters signed to this Petition, we can force a special election in St. Louis so that we can establish Race Separation by law as it is now practiced in great cities like Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, New Orleans, etc. This thing of dumping thousands of Blacks into our laps without any practical method for realistic segregation must end." Either officially or unofficially, the group appears to have been affiliated with Gerald L. K. Smith's Christian Nationalist Crusade, as a majority of the named committee members were involved with Smith's group. These include Opal Tanner (author of the anti-civil rights pamphlet, Alabama True Story), John Hamilton (who would go on to found the virulently racist National Citizens Protection League and edit its newsletter, The White Sentinel), Hermine A. Beck, and Joseph Intagliata. Needless to say, the group's campaign failed and the Racial Purity Committee dissolved.
