25.0 x 15.5cms, 64pp, fragile paperback (cover repaired with archiveal tape) Expatriate Lindsay proclaimed this periodical as 'a deliberate attempt to reaffirm Beauty, critically and constructively in six numbers only concerned with delight not disintegration. [It] may even be epoch-making because it has nothing whatever to do with the zeitgeist. Therefore the editors invite contributions from the world at large outside the lunatic asylums of the abstract and other official cliques'. The editorial manifestos declare that they 'stand for a point of view which equally outrages the modernist and reactionary.'.

The London Aphrodite was a literary magazine which existed between 1928 and 1929. It is known for its founders Jack Lindsay and P. R. Stephensen. It was described as an example of micro-modernist publications. In the first issue it was announced that there would be only six issues of The London Aphrodite. The same issue also contained a manifesto in which the editors attacked another British magazine entitled The London Mercury and its literary approach. Cover page of the each issue was printed in different colours (which are not in this bound volume) and it was published on a bimonthly basis not for profit, but for the fun of it. Some of the contributors were Liam O'Flaherty, Robert Nichols, Kenneth Slessor, Pittendrigh Macgillivray and Stanley Snaith. The final issue of The London Aphrodite appeared in July 1929. A Sign of the Mermaid sticker is present on the front pastedown which is probably original as the first and last pages of the book have mermaid illustrations. A clean very presentable copy.
