Book First Edition
Breslau 1876, 8°, 68, (1) pp., 2 Taf., orig. Broschur; Stemp., handschr. Anm. d.Verf. a.Tit. First Edition! "Magendie's opinion was not based on new experimental evidence; it was disputed in the year of his death by J. Poiseuille (1799-1869), the French physicist and physician, who, after completing his studies on the law regulating the flow of fluid in small tubes, was engaged in transferring his experimental results from the field of physics to that of physiology. By an a priori reasoning he postulated the elongation of capillaries during inspiration; he did not consider the possibility of simultaneous radial traction. He studied the effects of ventilation upon the herniated frog lung, and observed that blood flow was slower during chest distension. However, he failed to implicate positive inflation and to contrast its effect with that of natural inspiration. The same lack of discrimination between these opposite effects caused considerable confusion until Lichtheim produced experimental evidence that natural inspiration and insufflation under positive pressure had opposite effects upon the blood pressures in the pulmonary artery. The controversy was nonetheless very fruitful in several respects. First, a method of artificial circulation with defibrinated blood was developed and perfected; its use was extended later to the heart-lung preparation, which was adapted by Fühner and Starling to the study of the pulmonary circulation. With this method it became possible to control and to vary all mechanical factors and to measure pulmonary arterial, left atrial, and systemic pressures under selected conditions and combinations of inflow and outflow ." Alfred P. Fishmann & Dickinson W.Richards: Circulation of the Blood. Men and Ideas (1964), pp.51-52, 68.
