Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First American Edition. 12mo. (19 cm.) [8]9-256p. Translated from the French by Humphrey Hare. Black cloth with gilt letters on the spine and the Random House logo in gilt on the front cover. Rear dust jacket turn-in has a black and white photo of Paul Leautaud photographed by Henri Cartier-Bresson in 1952. Dust jacket design by Charles Mozley. Near fine with bright gilt and no internal markings. Autobiography. "Leautaud was not among the giants of French literature, but he was a man who could have dines with the giants. He has taken for his own a particular area of human life and no one is his rival there. It was the same area that Toulouse-Lautrec painted: the bars and brothels of Montmartre, the ugly, the beautiful and ravaged faces of the ageing cocottes. He 'judges not as a judge judges'; he only notices with the clear curious impartial eye of a child." [Graham Greene on the dust jacket].

1 jeu d'épreuves avec additions et corrections autographes 6 50 x 21,5 cm [1942] Provenance : bibliothèque Auguste Lambiotte (3e partie, Drouot 15 novembre 1977, n°53). Papier jauni, pliure centrale.
