Small 4to, maroon leather with gilt front and spine, 85pp, plus 6 linen-backed folding genealogical sheets, 85 pages. Frontis with Lawder arms, crest, motto (Sub tuarum umbra alarum - "Under the shadow of your wings"). Hardcover. Good binding and cover. Pages clean, unmarked. Small tear at head of spine. Family story of the Lawders, Lauders, or any of more than two dozen other spellings in the early records of Bass Rock, a large protrusion/island at the mouth of the Firth of Forth. Accounts of the family trace it to a ".Norman knight named de Lavedre, who accompanied Malcolm Canmore to Scotland in 1056, and who was rewarded by that Monarch, in return for the assistance he rendered against the usurper Macbeth, with a grant in Lothian, to which he was ordered to give his own name; hence the town of Lauder and district of Lauderdale.[others] however, state that the recipients of grants took their surnames from the lands they had received, or from the offices to which they were appointed, and they . give the name of "Lawder" as an example of the first-named case [i.e., taking a surname from the place granted]. [This is more likely] correct, because surnames did not come into use until a full hundred years after Malcolm Canmore's time." (p. 12) A rare, self-published account of a family whose members over the years contained some notable members. Unfortunately, there are many "Roberts," difficult to sort out in the records. One of that name was an associate of Wallace, and another (designated as Sir Robert de Lawedre, the younger) was appointed by Robert the Bruce as Justiciar of Scotland North of the Forth.

With 5 folding linen-backed charts of family trees. The Bass is a small fortified island in the mouth of the Firth of Forth a couple of miles off the coast of East Lothian in Scotland. Text clean throughout. Binding sound. Bound in maroon leather with gilt lettering on front board and spine. Top and bottom of spine lightly rubbed. Corners lightly bumped. Overall condition VG.
