Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Duodecimo, 288 pages + advertisements for The Humboldt Library, rebound in canvas marked "Standard Library", some pencilled glosses, faded paper sticker on top cover. With "Russia: an Ode" written by Swinburne after reading Lanin's account of "Russian Prisons". Lanin was the pen name used by various writers for the 'Fortnightly Review'. Here are chapters on Lying, Dishonesty, Russian Prisons, Sexual Morality, Jews in Russia, Russian Finance: The Racking of the Peasantry, the Russian Censure. Dillon also translated Tolstoi into English.

FIRST EDITION. Half title. Orig. red pebble-grained cloth, spine lettered in gilt; a little rubbed. Bookplate of Peter & Margery Morris on leading pastedown. Ownership inscription 'J. MacAlpine, 1892' on half title. A nice copy. Originally published in The Fortnightly Review between September 1889 and October 1892, these essays represent an attempt to give an impartial ethnographic portrait of Russia and its peoples at a time when the country was undergoing the enormous change inherent in becoming a modern state. The book obviously fails to attain the neutrality it sets out to achieve, and it is largely this that makes it of interest to the modern reader.
