Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover, 6.25x9.25 inches, 111 pages. First Edition. Kupfer was the president of William Nast College in Kiukiang, China. According to the introduction, some of the reasons for the book are to show readers the susceptibility of Chinese people to spiritual influences and to show the intellectual vigor of the Confucianists who control the government. Contents: early Buddhism in Hwang Mei, Ngn Ren Tsz - the Monastery of Benevolence, Kiu Hua Shan - the Nine-Lotus-Flower Mountain, Poot'oo - China's Sacred Island, The White Deer Grotto University, Lien Hsi Mu - the Mandarin's Grave, Lung Hu Shan - The Dragon-Tiger Mountain. With many black and white vintage photographic illustrations and a folding map of Poot'oo; nicely illustrated. Hardcover, with gilt titles on the front and spine, Very good plus condition. Bookplate of former owner, Walter Nast Weber, on inside front cover. In 1901 the school that had been known as Kiukiang Institute was renamed William Nast College to honor William Nast, the founder and leader of German-American Methodism. William Nast had several daughters, so it's quite possible that Walter Nast Weber could be the son of one of Nast's daughters, but I have not been able to confirm that. The dates would work out.
