Soft Cover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First edition. Covers lightly smudged. 1992 Soft Cover. 96 pp. Osprey's Campaign title for the Zulu War (1879). In the late 1870s the British Imperial administration in the Cape colony in southern Africa began to view the Zulu kingdom as a challenge to their authority. To contain this perceived threat, they engineered a war. The early campaigns went terribly wrong, with the decisive Zulu victory at Isandlwana. Ultimately however, the British won the war. The Zulus, primarily reliant on their skill with the stabbing spear, had no real defence or retaliation against the massed firepower of professional British soldiers. Ian Castle examines the British-Zulu war and its two key battles, Isandlwana and Khambula, with excellent black and white photographs accompanying the clear and detailed text.

Paperback. Condition: Mint. Perry, Alan (illustrator). Reprint. RORKE'S DRIFT 1879 'Pinned Like Rats in A Hole' Ian Knight Illustrated by Michael & Alan Parry. Osprey Publishing, Oxford. 2004 Reprint ISBN 1855325063 96pp Illustrated Paperback. Rorke's Drift sums up some of the best traditions of the British self-image: steadfastness against the odds, victory in adversity and the thin red line. The British stand deserves to go down in history as one of the most heroic actions of all time. The story of a mere 150 British and Imperial soldiers defending an isolated outpost against over 3,000 Zulu warriors summed up the experience of the colonial adventure for the Victorians and remains part of our heritage even today. Ian Knight recounts the course of this famous conflict in which no less than 11 Victoria crosses were won. This copy is in MINT condition in illustrated card wrappers as issued. Ref L3.

Hardback. 280 pages with 510 illustrations. â ¢Dimensions â : â 26.5 x 29.4 cmPublished Price £24.99 The Zulu War Then and Now was a departure from the normal time scale covered by After the Battle and enabled a completely fresh approach to be given to one of the most widely known military campaigns of the Victorian era. This was the first time that the battlefields of this classic conflict were presented through After the Battleâ s familiar â then and nowâ photographic theme ( In this tile it would be fair to say that their are many more â Thenâ images than â Nowâ ones). Many graphic eyewitness accounts from both sides convey exactly what it was like to give battle in the 1870s. Additional chapters cover what remains to be seen today, both on the battlefields and in museums; the lonely and sometimes unmarked and forgotten graves of the participants; the British forts and their ruins, plus accounts of those film productions that have since been made of the 1879 war.Overseas clients please note: Due to excessively high wrapped weight shipping is weighted on this title.

Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. GREAT ZULU BATTLES 1838-1906 Ian Knight. Arms and Armour Press, London. 1998 First Edition ISBN 1854093908 224pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is in fine unmarked condition in a fine unclipped dust wrapper. The period 1838 to 1906 in Southern African history was a bloody one, although it proved to be crucial in the continent's evolution and in the development of national identities. In this study, nine Zulu actions are described in detail, graphically conveying the drama of the battlefield. Ian Knight is probably the preeminent authority on Zulu History, and this is a fascinating account of a series of 10 different battles that occurred over the course of 70 years, featuring Zulus against the Boers, Zulus against the British, and Zulus against Zulus. This book carries the subtitle 'Campaigning in Zululand through the Eyes of the British Soldier, 1879'. This is an apt description that sums-up entirely the intent and content of this research, presented by the British military historian - Ian Knight - who has written widely on this subject, including much work reconstructing and conveying the Zulu viewpoint of the British invasion of their country in 1879, an invasion that witnessed a startling military reversal in its early days, that saw the destruction of a British force at Isandlwana (22nd January, 1879) and the eventual British military victory at Ulundi (July 4th, 1879). This book gathers together in one place, all the material written by the British eyewitnesses of the day. Much of it originates from British Army Officers, with just one account being ascribed to a British private soldier. The hardback 1992 edition contains 272 numbered pages, with 17 coloured illustrations depicting various action scenes of the war that appeared in various British newspapers of the time. There are also a small number of lined drawings contained in the various accounts, giving the reader information about the battle, positionings and directions, etc. The book is separated into five parts: Ref NNN 5.
