Condition: Fair. 1877. Fourth Edition. 376 pages. No dust jacket. Blue cloth. Contains black and white photographic plates. Pages are lightly tanned and foxed throughout. Cracking to gutters of a few pages with exposed binding. Previous owner's inscription to reverse side of frontispiece. Cracking to hinges with exposed binding, causing boards to be loose. Binding is shaky. Boards have moderate edge wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Crushing to spine ends with small splits and fraying to cloth. Mild tanning to spine and edges. Rubbed marking to surfaces.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. VERY SLIGHTLY RUBBED AND SCUFFED TO THE EDGES AND CORNERS,THE PAGES APPEAR CLEAN AND CREASE FREE. SPINE IS SLIGHTLY COCKED. ALL IN ALL, A VERY CLEAN EXAMPLE OF THIS WONDERFUL NOVEL.

The scarce two volume 1881 'Eversley Edition' of Charles Kingsley's historical adventure novel concerning the Anglo-Saxon resistance to the Norman Conquest. In lovely half morocco signed bindings from Bickers and Son.Kingsley's novel follows the historical Anglo-Saxon figure Hereward as he leads the resistance against the Normans from a base in Ely. First published in 1866, this was Kingsley's final historical novel, and was instrumental in elevating Hereward into an English folk-hero. In half morocco signed bindings, with paper covered boards. Small loss of leather to head of volume I front joint, with rubbing to paper of front board of volume II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright, with minor spotting to head of volume II title page. Very Good Indeed. book.
