The campaign was an unusual one in that it was conducted during the bitter winter months considered up to then as an impossible time to carry out effective military actions. The Indian tribes, ~ Kiowas, Cheyenne, Arapahoe, ~ were in winter quarters, fully expecting to be secure from the U.S. Army until spring. The campaign was brought to a conclusion with the Battle of the Washita ~ a success for the U.S. Army, another tragedy for the Indians. Randolph Keim accompanied General Sheridan in the field for six months during which time he observed all aspects of Army life during an Indian campaign. Although his attitudes toward the Indians reflect the Army point of view at this time, this report on his experiences with troops, published in 1870, presents a fascinating look at the daily life of soldiers in the field, a highly informative view of headquarters operations and a valuable picture of one of America's most able and colorful generals. Perhaps most interesting of all is the detailed account of the frontier Army on the march during a deadly Plains winter. "Sheridan's Troopers" provides an informative look at warfare on the western frontiers, and the Indians' futile attempts to cope with the U.S. troops. Sheridan strongly approved of the book and called it "a graphic history of the campaign." Prof. Ray Billington includes "Sheridan's Troopers" in the bibliography of his unsurpassed "Westward Expansion" as a "special study" of the Battle of the Washita and a "colorful account.".
