Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Reprint. Three essays related to Newton and his work: the first a biographical sketch, the first in English to admit of Newton's failings, minor though they may have been; the second on the controversy of priority between Newton & Leibniz for the devolopment of calculus, or fluxions; the third a critique of Brewster's life of Newton, with De Morgan again defending Leibniz and pointing out that Newton, while great, was imperfect. The editor has also added some bibliographic notes on manuscript sources, De Morgan's notes on Leibniz & Newton's character. Undated reprint, perhaps circa 1950; small hardcover in jacket, as pictured. Light wear to book, near fine; jacket shows light chipping & edgewear, spine lightly tanned, very minor silverfishing to rear panel. Text clean; xiii, blank, 198 pages, index, notes. Size: Small Octavo.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Printed in Great Britain. Frontispiece, Editor's Preface, Appendices, Index; 198 pages, followed by publisher's selection of works. (16 pages; this book is listed as "just published.") The original olive green cloth is rubbed at the extremities and shows some spotting; the black lettering is clear on the upper board, though faded on the sunned spine. The binding remains strong and the interior is bright, crisp and clean. The Open Court London address has been stamped at the base of the title page. [Please see multiple images of the actual book.] The first essay is a biographical sketch of Newton. The second concerns the great controversy about the invention of the fluxional or infinitesimal calculus, in which Newton and Leibniz were the principals. The third is a critique of Brewster's "Memoirs" of Newton, from a review published by De Morgan in 1855. Additional notes and references have been added to all three essays. As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking. Please note that, due to COVID-19, overseas shipping may incur unusual delays.
