No Binding. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 Typed letter on thin paper, March 31, 1979 from Chicago, Illinois. It reads in part: "Thank you for your comments concerning the hardback for paperback books. Strangely enough yours was the only negative comment I've received.as I go ahead with the project. The going will be slow and rough as I haven't been able to get someone to make them for me as yet-no one wants to tool up for a trial run. I guess I will have to make them for the trial period and then hopefully use facts and figures to sell a manufacturer. There won't be a new book this year.It has grown so much since its inception that it will require tremendous labor on my part. That coupled with the new project of launching the hardback is keeping me terribly busy. You will be one of the first to see the new book when it is completed. Sincerely, [signed] Joseph J. D'Ambrosio" One horizontal fold.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Joseph J. D'Ambrosio (illustrator). Limited Edition. What a remarkable work of art! This edition of The Ondt and the Gracehoper, limited to fifty numbered copies (41) and five artists proofs, has been set in 18pt Bulmer and printed by The Compulsive Printer of Portage Indiana, on a Number three Vandercook proof press. The serigraphs which are quite striking, block prints and presentation case were all prepared by the artist, the late, great Joe D'Ambrosio (1934-2009). The cover relief serigraph is gilded with 23 K gold. The story is taken from Two Tales of Shem and Shaun by james Joyce. The book appears to be a bound book, but is really a case and the pages are loose within it. The cover relief-serigraph was produced with 26 layers of silkscreen ink, and then gilded with 23K gold leaf. The last coat of ink is red and lies just below the top layer of gold. As the gold wears away, a red patina will slowly emerge allowing this edition to age gracefully. This device is fro the Italian gilder's craft of gold leaf over red clay. The binding is dark green Ultrasuede over board framing; pinwale corduroy sides and lining. A great piece of art and a great Joyce collectible. Internally flawless the framed clamshell box has small bump on front lower corner a little warped and slight rubbing due to the nature of ultrasuede. Size: 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Signed by author, Illustrator.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. In Literary Figures one of the worlds finest book artists the late (1934-2009) Joe D'Ambrosio. In Literary Figures D'Ambrosio is experimenting with communicating the writing styles of ten known authors, ( Joyce-Steinbeck-Fowles- Shirley jackson-Andre Gide- Mann- Durrell-Agee-Tolstoy and Zola) through graphic imagery. The images are printed on different kinds of paper. The individual; color and texture of the paper acts as a background and becomes an integral part of the image, The paper is tipped into place only at the top so the viewer may lift its lower edge and feel its surface. Serigraphy and letter press printing were used to create the graphic prints. Even though there are 10 authors represented, there are eleven prints in the book. To assure that the prints remain in sequence, the folios are bound within a clam-shell box. Hardcover. Condition: New. Joseph J. D'Ambrosio (illustrator). 1st Edition. Three By D', Joseph j. D' Ambrosio is a special handmade clamshell box containing three miniature books. The box is quarter bound in black Morocco over hand made marble papers with black Morocco tips. There is no indication how many of these sets were created. It may be a one of a kind designed for special friends of D'Ambrosio and collectors of his legendary work. 1) The first book is Masks by Carol Cunningham who signed the book. It is #19 of an addition of 115 and 10 A.P. The book is 2 3/4 x 2 3/8 The binding is cloth over boards with 3- dimensional mask in front cover; slipcase of Ingres paper over boards with acetate window. Carol and Joe collaborated on this work " Carol is an excellent writer and printer, but her bindings at that time fell short of her other talents" " Placing the mask within the front cover gave the book a bulky appearance. I visually reduced the bulk by placing three 'steps' in the spine area. The 'steps' also serve as a handy place for one's fingertips when reading the tiny object" the book is in new condition as is the stepped slipcase. The book has been signed by the authorCarol Cunningham. There are 25 striking serigraphs of masks representing the Pacific Northwest, South America and Asia. There is no indication who drew and designed the masks, but they appear to be the work of both Cunningham and D'Ambrosio. What this fabulous miniature lacks in stature in more than makes up for in soul. 2) The Little Sand Crab by Joe D'Ambrosio # 27 of 75 plus 10 A.P. 2 3/8 x2 7/8 This wonderful miniature is set in 8pt. Bulmer type and has 20 leaves of Ingres oyster paper. The binding is red cloth over boards framing a 23K gilt sunburst exposing Cockerell end paper between it's rays; gold leaf ornament at head of spine; cutaway slipcase of black Ingres paper over boards. This book represents D'Ambrosio's long association with his friend and mentor "Mr." Mundell who passed away a year later. The book is new and was produced in 1982 in Sherman Oaks California. Besides the spectacular binding there are three nice prints on the interior. Each print is signed and numbered by the author/artist. the book is additionally inscribed to his friends and collectors extraordinar,Pat and Trudy Magarick with an extra small hand drawn picture of a little Sand Crab. 3) The Crusader by Mary jane Hammett ( Dashiell Hammett writing under a pseudonym). The book is a limited edition of 85 copies and 5 A.P. this in # 16. The type is 10 pt. Bakerville and the 20 leaves are printed on Mohawk Superfine paper. The binding is White linen and clear acetate; black paper over boards make up the slipcase.D'Ambrosios friend and mentor and fellow printer " Mr." Mundell who signed this miniature urged D'Ambrosio " to Produce this eerie profile of an upstanding citizen who in his private life is a member of the Ku Klux Klan. The story begins quietly and then becomes terribly alarming as the citizen's private life is bared.D' Ambrosio to literally attack the wood blicks that were cut for the prints to reflect the terror. The binding is a virtual metaphor of white for purity. D' Ambrosio states seriously " this story frightens me, and I produced it for the same reason Hammett wrote it: Revelation of evil in man, masked by a mantle of piousness." The story appeared in the Aug. 1923 issue of The Smart Set, The Aristocrat Among magazines. Book is new and each of the 8 provocative prints are signed and lettered by D'Ambrosio. the book is also inscribed " To my dear friend Pat." The set of books are wonderful collectibles to be cherished by serious collectors of masterpieces of fine printing in miniature. Signed by Author(s).

This is copy number 17 of a limited edition of 50 numbered copies and seven Artist's Proofs of "Literary Figures" by Joseph J. D'Ambrosio. The item was published in 1978 by The Compulsive Printer of Portage, Indiana. The objective of this folio, as stated in the Preface, is to use "a collection of graphic prints. intended to visually convey the style and writing content of ten different authors through the medium of serigraphy and letterpress. The object of each graphic print is to communicate the aura associated with each author making the writer unique in literature." The ten authors chosen by D'Ambrosio are James Joyce, John Steinbeck, John Fowles, Shirley Jackson, Andre Gide, Thomas Mann, Lawrence Durrell, James Agee, Leo Tolstoy, and Emile Zola. The Preface continues with ".The commentary introducing each author is intended to allow the viewer to more clearly understand the premise on which the completed graphic print is based. There are a total of eleven graphic prints in the Folio. The first, located immediately behind the Title page, is titled "Literary Figures" and is signed and dated by D'Ambrosio. With Box. Condition: Like New. Limited First Edition. No. 49 of 50 copies of this artist's book inspired by the movie star Gloria Stuart (1910 -2010). Ms. Stuart was a leading lady in the 1930s and early 1940s, best known then for her roles in "The Invisible Man", and many decades later, after a long retirement from the movies, for her role in "Titanic" in 1997. Ms. Stuart, though, was far from idle during her many years away from acting, and her multifarious productivity away from the camera are every bit as fascinating as her Hollywood career. Besides being a political activist sympathetic to liberal causes throughout her life, Ms. Stuart was active in the decorative arts as a designer and business owner, and she enjoyed considerable success as a primitivist painter as well. Most pertinent to this book, Ms. Stuart became both an ardent gardener and an artisan printer, producing artist's book in which she did virtually everything, including the writing, the designing and the printing. While this book was written and produced by Joseph J. D'Ambrosio, a celebrated California book artist, it is a celebration and homage to Ms. Stuart's achievements, and some of the elements in the book such as the overlay of foliage imagery are a nod to Ms. Stuart's own work. This D'Ambrosio creation impresses with many other clever effects such as its intricate paper cuts of the preliminary pages to conjure up a three dimensional illusion of forest and trees, with the foreground a caryatid of two tree trunks shaped like women's bodies. D'Ambrosio has bestowed on us an object of revelatory beauty, and while the aesthetic is unabashedly modernist, the spirit is traditional artistry and artisanship at its best. The book, which is modest in size, a little over 6 inches tall, is in mint condition, and it is protected with a cloth box that contains a felt repository or well in which the book resides.
