Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos, Art, Maps (illustrator). 1st. Fiordland, at the south west extremity of NZ's South Island, is among the most rugged and weather unfriendly regions of the country, largely uninhabited by pre-European Maori and for many years after Europeans arrived remained largely undeveloped. Among those taking an early interest in Fiordland were sealers and whalers, fisherman and gold prospectors. These early characters, plus hardy surveyors and settlers, gave pre-20th Century Fiordland a fascinating history and its on these people and that period that the author focuses attention while also discussing the largely unsuccessful attempts to establish permanant township settlements. On the more romantic side the interior was reputed to be the home of a "mysterious Lost Tribe" and it was in this area that a herd of Wapiti was introduced to become the elusive, but prized, trophy for deer stalkers and providing many challenges for mountaineers. The author's entry into Southland history was almost inevritable --- his great grandfather was an pioneer surveyor in the region and his father the well-known South Island historian F G Hall-Jones. This study of Fiordland esablished the author's credentials as an historian and contains much information not perviously available. First edition from Reed of 1968, 199 pages including two appendices and index, 51 b/w photos, 19 maps etc in text, colour tone e/paper maps, Hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG, text block excellent with small brown spot at vertical edge margin five pages at back of text block. no inscriptions. Colour art/pictorial DJ has tape repaired tear top edge adjacent spine, few chips, otherwise VG.
