Hardcover. Condition: g to g+. Second edition. Folio (15 1/2 x 10 1/4"). [12], 2680 columns (1440pp), [64]pp (Index). Modern full brown morocco, with gilt-lettered leather label on spine. Raised bands. Decorative head-, tailpieces and initials. Begun by Johannes Buxtorf in 1609, and completed by his son in 1639, this second edition of "Lexicon chaldaicum, talmudicum et rabbinicum" immediately became a standard reference work for Christian scholars in Jewish studies. (a new but very imperfect edition was published as late as 1866). Because of the time needed to be completed, the "Lexicon chaldaicum, talmudicum et rabbinicum" has often been referred to as the "opus triginta annorum," work of thirty years (1609-1639). Integrating a variety of Roman, Italic, Greek, Hebrew and Gothic typefaces, this lexicon is also an impressive example of 17th century printing. The text, in two columns, is arranged alphabetically according to the Hebrew alphabet, however, the text itself is in Latin. Unfortunately, this work is lacking the engraved frontispiece portrait of Johannes Buxtorf and the additional engraved title. Moderate rubbing along front joint. Gold lettering mostly faded on title label. Modern endpapers and fly leaves. Previous owners' inscriptions pasted on inside of front cover. Lower corner of title page expertly repaired. Most pages foxed / age-toned throughout. Text in Latin with some Hebrew. Binding in overall good+, interior in good to good+ condition. About the author: Johannes Buxtorf (1564-1629) was a celebrated Hebraist, member of a family of Orientalists; professor of Hebrew for thirty-nine years at Basel and was known by the title, "Master of the Rabbis." His massive work, "De Synagoga Judaica" (1st. ed. 1603), scrupulously documents the customs and society of German Jewry in the early modern period. Buxtorf was the father of Johannes Buxtorf the Younger.

Hardcover. Condition: g to vg. First edition. Large octavo (8 1/4 x 7"). [16], 1026, [26]pp. Contemporary full vellum with handwritten title in ink on spine. Printer's device to title page. Decorative head-, tailpieces and initials. Buxtorf's "Anticritica" is a rebuke of Louis Cappel's second important work "Critica Sacra" (1650), a book highly controversial from a theological point of view as the author endeavored not only to demonstrate that the Hebrew vowel-points were a novel invention, but also that - based on the various readings in the text and the differences between the ancient versions and the Masoretic text - the integrity of the Hebrew text, as held by Protestants, was intenable. Vellum age-toned, slightly darkened and partly soiled. Ex-library copy, with bookplate on inside of front cover (Sutro Library, San Francisco, California), and previous owner's Ex-Libris on front free endpaper (Wm. R. Blumenthal). Minor to moderate age-toning throughout. A few pages are heavily foxed. Text in Latin. Binding in overall good, interior in good to very good condition.

Hardcover. Condition: g to vg. First edition. Octavo (8 x 6"). [68]pp; [80]pp; [72]pp; [88]pp; [44]pp; [56]pp; [64]pp; [96]pp; [24], 437, [19]pp. Contemporary full vellum with handwritten title in ink on spine. Printer's device to each title page. Decorative head-, tailpieces and initials. This first edition of Johann Buxtorf II's Protestant philologico-theological works are composed of: - I. De Linguæ Hebrææ Origine, Antiquitate, & Sanctitate (1644) - II. De Linguæ Hebrææ Confusione, & Plurium Linguarum Origine (1644) - III. De Linguæ Hebrææ Conservatione, Propagatione, & Duratione (1644) - IV. De Literarum Hebraicarum Genuina Antiquitate (1643) - V. De Nominibus Dei Hebraicis (1645) - VI. De Decalogo (1643) - VII. De Primæ CÅ"næ Dominicæ Ritibus & Formâ (1642) Each of these titles have retained their original title page. These works are bound with: - "Vindiciae exercitationis suae in Historiam Institutionis S.S. Coenae Dominicae: adversus Animadversiones Ludovici Cappelli" (1646), which sharply criticizes Cappellus' "Historiam Institutionis S.S. Coenae Dominicae" for siding with Joseph Scaliger's "Emendatione Temporum." Published in 1583, "Emendatione Temporum" makes clear that the Last Supper described in the Synoptic Gospels must actually have been superimposed on a normal Passover. His arguments evidently excited many Calvinist readers, including Johann Buxtorf the Younger. - "Tractatus de punctorum origine, antiquitate, et authoritate, oppositus Arcano puntationis revelato Ludovici Cappelli" (1648). In this work, the author defends the authenticity of the vocalization "JEHOVAH," the four-letter Hebrew name for God ("Yahweh"). The book was written to defend and elaborate upon a similar book by his father, Johannes Buxtorf Sr., entitled "Tiberias, sive Commentarius Masoreticus" (1620 and 1664), arguing against Elias Levita's view of the late origin of the Hebrew vowel points. Vellum age-toned, slightly darkened, and with minor abrasions. Ex-library copy, with bookplate on inside of front cover (Sutro Library, San Francisco, California), and previous owner's Ex-Libris on front free endpaper (Wm. R. Blumenthal). Minor to moderate age-toning throughout. Text in Latin. Binding in overall good, interior in good to very good condition. Johannes Buxtorf the Younger (1599 -1664) was the son of scholar Johannes Buxtorf, and a Protestant Christian Hebraist.
