hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Reference book entirely in Latin and Ancient Greek. Contains many appendices and indices. Huge, thick, half-bound hardback with no jacket and decorative boards, with a green ribbon around whole. Boards are aged and worn with scoring and scuffing and worn, frayed edges; rear top and bottom edges are dented in one place each. Leading corners are weak, bent and fraying. Separation beginning at top of rear board by spine; front board is almost completely separated from spine. Slightly cocked. Leather spine itself faded, heavily scuffed and bumped and frayed at head and foot of spine, with some loss from a tear at top, but lettering legible. Page block very tanned with some scuffing. Pastedowns and endpapers foxed and grubby; blanks tanned and foxed as are most page edges. Title page creased, with pencilled name of owner on reverse. p.941-973 have dog-eared lower corners, leading to intermittent creasing of the same corner on some following pages until end. Pages are slightly warped from age but tightly bound considering; maybe 0.5-1% of pages have light, unobtrusive pencilled marginalia and underlining. Aside from age-related wear, grubbiness and sunning, content is all clear and the book has aged well overall. TS. Used.

Contemporary brown full calf, six raised bands, triple blind rule on both boards, later marbled endpapers. Three inch split in the head of the lower joint, top headband partly detached, faint tide mark to the top fore-corner of the final 40%, front blank leaf creased otherwise a VG solid copy with the armorial bookplate of Allen Sausmarez Carey, Mourne Grange on the front pastedown.

(2), viii, 1792 columns, 490pp., 182 columns, 27pp. Rebacked retaining original leather boards with black-stamped ornamental ruling and leather spine laid down with gilt ruling and gilt lettering on red label of spine; reinforced with binder's tape. Marbled edges. Title page printed in red and black with steel engraving. While on the staff of the printer Henri Estienne Johann Scapula 'secured' material from Etiennes' Greek Thesaurus, a work started buy his father and first published in 1572. Scalpula incorporated the material into his Greek Lexicon which was first published in 1580, the year Scalpula became a Professor for Greek and Moral at the Academy of Lausanne. The Greek words are not organized in strict alphabetical order but by word roots and language families. The front free endpapers contain elaborate pencil notes and amateurish drawings of a chariot and a man's anatomy with Greek notations. A third page contains inked notes about various currencies and its value. Three free endpapers at rear also with elaborate pencil notes in Greek. Binding with some wear along edges, some scuffing and chipping, plates rubbed and with some scuffing. Library barcode on upper left corner of front cover and library sticker at tail of spine. Upper and lower edge with library stamp. Library exlibris on inside front cover. Light offsetting of inked notes to title page. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition.

The boards panelled in gilt and blind with rolls, swags and corner tools, double gilt line on edges and a decorative roll on the turn ins. Spine ornately gilt in six panels between wide flat bands, lettered in second and fifth. Expertly rebacked and original spine re- laid, with a little loss at the head. Marbled endpapers and edges. A handsome copy of an important edition. Scapula's Lexicon contains c.60,000 entries, abridged from the four volumes of Robert Estienne's Thesaurus Linguae Latinae of 1532. It's popularity was increased by its single volume format.
