Ratgeber zur Einrichtung einer kleinen erlesenen Bibliothek, gewidmet dem Prinzen Heinrich von Preußen. Formey, ständiger Sekretär der Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften leitet seine Schrift ein durch eine Betrachtung, wie man mit nur 100 Büchern eine Bibliothek sinnvoll einrichtet. Die dann folgenden Ratschläge für die Zusammenstellung einer ausgewählten Bibliothek ordnete Formey in zwölf Kapiteln nach Sachgebieten (Theologie, Philosophie, Poesie, Militärgeschichte, Rhetorik, Moral und Geschmack usw.). Jeder vorgeschlagene Titel (fast ausschließlich Bücher in französischer Sprache) wird ausführlich kommentiert; nach einer Titel- und Verfasserliste für jedes Sachgebiet schickt Formey noch eine Notiz über seine eigenen Werke hintendrein. (one folding), contemporary half leather, sprinkled boards, small black leather label on back. Top and end of spine a bit shaved, name in ink on title, but a fine copy.

Contemporary full calf, Spine with gilt ornaments and title. Marbled endpapers. Edges red. = Nice little booklet on how to select a library only of 100 books, with an address to the Prussian King. The work is divided in 12 chapters including travel, philosophy, history, mathematics, and medicine, and a list of the works of the author, the German historian and philosopher Johann Heinrich Samuel (or Jean Henri Samuel) Formey (1711-1797), who wrote in French, being of Huguenot descent. Boards rubbed with much of the spine gilt lost; tiny bump to fore edge, some marginal toning to the first few leaves, but in all a very good copy. Brunet, 31327.
