See Spadoni and Donnelly: "A Bibliography of McClelland and Stewart Imprints, 1909-1985" (#794, p. 240). Watters, p. 513. Hiawatha has long been considered a mere legendary personage but Dr. Hatzan's researches of Indian records and traditions prove him to be a very real and important historical character. Hiawatha had much to do with the forming of the Six Nations' confederacy and was instrumental in bringing about many reforms for the betterment of his race. Here is also a clear, forceful discussion of the origin of the Indian race, and a history of the Iroquois and other tribes of the Six Nations, with a sketch of the life of their famous leader, Joseph Brant. A most interesting collection of Indian speeches is included, dating from the time of Columbus down to the present day. The illustrations are of a unique character. Dr. Hatzan's information has been gained chiefly at first hand, as he has lived among many Indian tribes from Bahia, in Brazil, to Muskoka in Canada.
