Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: G+. Photo Frontis (illustrator). 1st. Lieutenant Commander David Wanklyn RN, VC, DSO and two Bars, was the leading British submariner of World War II, making his name, and that of his ship, HMSubmarine Upholder, part of the Royal Navy's folk lore. He was the top scoring RN submarine commander in tonnage terms for WWII and was also the first to receive a VC in that conflict. He joined the navy in 1925 and its submarine service in 1932. In mid-1940 he was appointed CO of the new sub Upholder and in mid-1941, in the Mediterranean, he sank the Italian troopship Conto Rosso in a most difficult and hazardous action, for which his VC was awarded. By the end of 1941 he had sunk about 140,000 tons of enemy ships, 40,000 tons on one patrol. The total included warships, thee enemy submarines and merchant shipping of all types. In April '42 the Upholder was lost with her captain and crew on the ship's 25th patrol, operating out of Malta. It is thought Upholder was sunk in a depth charge attack by Italian warships, although mines or air attack were other possibilities. Wanklyn's achievements against enemy shipping, particularly those taking reinforcements and supplies to the Axis forces in North Africa, was important in the defeat of the enemy there. In this book about the career of the Upholder and her Captain the author, Sydney Hart, takes the reader through Wanklyn's life from boyhood, his family and personal background, early days in the navy, command, with the operations of the Upholder in the Mediterranean, which included landing secret agents on enemy territory, comprising the bulk of his story. The exploits of the sub and her crew are related in gripping passages with the ring of reality that could be expected of an author who served in RN submarines from 1939 to '43. First edition of 1960 from Oldbourne, 208 pages including Upholder crew list and appendix, b/w frontis photo showing Wanklyn on the Upholder's conning tower, small submarine drawing top corner title page. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG withr fade band top edges/spine top, few flecks foxing top edge last text page, text block otherwise excellent, no inscriptions. Colour art DJ is G+ with tape repaired tear lower rear flap, some short tears/chips.
