It has been stated in the Life of Horace that after his schoolboy days were over he went to Athens to pursue higher studies in philosophy, and to cultivate a more thorough knowledge of Green literature. He seems to have read much of the lyric poetry of Alceus and Sappho and which had a special charm for him. This, as it turned out, gained him his lasting fame.
