Etching and Drypoint, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST, in pencil, good margins, This view near Romsey was captured at dusk on the same day Haden made another etching 'A Water Meadow' of a nearby scene at noon. He made considerable changes to the plate eventually introducing sheep into the foreground as in this impression.K.M. Guichard in his 'British Etchers 1850-1940' states Haden, who was inspired by Rembrandt 'should be regarded as the founder of the etching movement as we know it . . . His mastery of foliage, water and atmosphere made him universally respected both in England and abroad. He was able to work directly on to the plate, in the open air'. Reproduced as Plate 23 in Guichard.Provenance: Walker's Galleries, their label on reverse of frame. Pencilled note, purchased at Christie's February 1922.
