Illustrated with a frontispiece and seven plates. Collated complete. A detailed account of the author's time in India after her husband was offered the post of Political Agent an Manipur. With commentary on her first impressions, the local tribes, learning the language, trips in the surrounding area, and the people she interacts with. The work also includes chapters on the Anglo-Manipur War, her husband's death, and her role in the retreat, leading to receiving the Red Cross and the ceremony at Windsor. Written by Ethel St. Clair Grimwood, a British woman who became known as "the heroine of Manipur" after her instrumental role in leading the retreat to British held territory during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. In the original full blue cloth binding. Externally, sound with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd small mark to the boards. Splits in the cloth to the joints with light loss and fraying to the head and tail of the spine. Front hinge starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound with loss of the rear endpaper. In England she was fated as a heroine with Queen Victoria awarded her the Royal Red Cross medal.
