First Edition
Hardback. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Grimshaw, Beatrice. When the Red Gods Call. New York: Moffat, Yard & Company, 1911. First U.S. edition. Octavo, pp. [1-6] 1-364 [365-366: blank]. Original navy blue pictorial cloth, front panel stamped in orange and yellow, spine panel stamped in yellow. Missing front free endpaper, rear panel a bit scuffed and marked, else a good sound copy. #1872. $15. Adventure novel set in the South Seas, like almost all her fiction. The author (1870-1953) was born and raised in Northern Ireland and educated there and in Europe. Described as "athletic, adventurous and intelligent" (Loeber and Loeber, A Guide to Irish Fiction, p. 524), she embarked on a career of journalism and fiction writing -- and travel. She set off for the South Seas in 1904 and never came back. It's hard to tell whether she traveled in order to get material for writing, or whether she wrote as an excuse for travel -- or both. "Some of her books became best-sellers in Australia, the US and England. While written for a popular market, her novels provide competent and useful information on the lives and attitudes of settlers in these parts of the world." (ibid, p. 525). She published her novels and short stories in some forty volumes. The present title is sometimes considered her most popular. Much of her fiction touches on local superstitions.
