One half brown leather with gilt decorations to the spines; marbled paper over boards; Upper edges gilt; marbled endpages. New burgandy and black title plates to the spines. Bound in ribbon markers. Aside from some mild shelfwear and some browning to the outer page edges, the books are fine. This is a unique signed set, with an address from a piece of mail signed and dated by Grenville in 1828 bound into volume one of part one.

The first edition of the complete three volumes, handsomely and uniformly bound in eight volumes, of The Greville Memoirs. The first edition of this three volume work, bound in eight volumes in full calf bindings, with gilt decoration to the spine and square. Marbled end papers. Top edges gilt. Booksellers stamp of H. Sotheran to the head, and binder's stamp of Riviere & Son to the tail, of the verso of the front free end paper of each volume. Bookplate of Sir Edward Levy-Lawson (1833-1916), 1st Baron Burnham and 1st Baronet, to the front paste down of each volume. Sir Edward Levy-Lawson was the owner and publisher of The Daily Telegraph. Charles Greville (1794-1865) wrote his diaries between 1817 to 1837, to record events during the reigns of King George IV and King William IV. They were edited by Henry Reeve and first published in three parts: the first three volumes, covering 1817 to 1837, were published in 1874; the next three, for the period from 1837 to 1852, were published in 1885; and the final two, covering 1852 to 1860, were published in 1887. Some passages caused great offence, in particular to Queen Victoria, who was "horrified and indignant". In a full calf bindings. Externally very smart, with a little rubbing to the extremities of each volume. Rubbing to the rear board of Volume I, front board of Volume VIII, and to the head and tail of the spine to Volume II and VI. Lower corner to the rear board of Volume VIII is somewhat bumped. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age toned to the page perimeters with the occasional spot. Faint tidemark to the lower corner of pages 217 to 257 of Volume I. Very Good Indeed. book.
