Gibbon's Memoirs and Miscellaneous Works were first published in 1796, just two years after his death, by his friend and literary executor Lord Sheffield. The Memoirs were compiled by Sheffield from six different incomplete manuscripts left among Gibbon's papers after his death. Originally published in a two-volume quarto edition, a new and enlarged edition (the present) was issued in 1814 in five octavo volumes, bringing to light a substantial quantity of new material gleaned from his Journal, Letters, and other miscellaneous papers. (A year later, in 1815, the original quarto edition was brought up to date with the addition of a third volume.) Norton 134.
