Long Island News noted: Gerald Reminick was moonlighting at the Deer Park Library to put his kids through college a dozen years ago when Matthew Loughran came in seeking research help. Reminick became fascinated with the story of the unsung sailors who kept the war effort alive and was determined to tell it.The result is publication of four books on the World War II merchant marine with a fifth due out next month. Reminick, 61, of Huntington, whose day job since 1981 has been professor of library services at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood, said only a few authors have focused on merchant shipping during the war. "It's a narrow maritime niche," he said. "But I just love these guys." He described the merchant marine as the link between the workforce at home and the armed forces overseas. "They were never recognized because they were considered civilians," he said, adding that still they faced combat in attacks by enemy submarines and aircraft. "They suffered the greatest percentage of casualties of all the services in the war -- one out of every 26 died," Reminick said. He noted that 833 American cargo vessels were sunk during the war with 8,600 seamen killed and another 12,000 wounded. "They are the first to go and the last to come back," Reminick said."We had 10 merchant ships that were sunk before Pearl Harbor. And at the end of the war, they had to stick around to bring back the troops and equipment, and in the process more than 50 ships were lost when they struck mines." When they did make it home, Reminick said, ".there were no parades and no benefits like the GI Bill." It wasn't until 1988 that merchant marine veterans were declared eligible for federal benefits for their war service. After meeting Loughran, Reminick began soliciting veterans' stories. In exceptionally good condition.
