8vo. 2 vols. in one. XX, 389, (3) pp. (4), 474, (2) pp. Contemporary full vellum with giltstamped red label to spine on 5 raised bands. All edges sprinkled blue. First edition. A treatise on social organization and political economy which shows a remarkable resemblance to the theories of the Physiocrats. Schmid(t) (1720-1805) was born in Avenstein, Switzerland, and long served as councillor to the Duke of Saxe-Weimar. He was in contact with many of the French enlightened philosophers of his time, including Voltaire, Diderot and d'Alembert. In the present book the author states that a flourishing agriculture is a distinguishing mark for the prosperity of a nation, as is an abundant population whose every member feels at ease. He favours private property and inequality of wealth as inherent to the natural order, but rejects luxury and pleads for direct rather than indirect taxation. Moreover, he argues for the promotion of the arts and sciences, for education for all classes of society, which entails freedom of thought, speech and writing, and for the establishment of a lasting peace. - Slight flaw to vellum at foot of front hinge, otherwise fine. - INED 4116 (at length). Einaudi A867. Not in Kress.

First Edition
First edition of Schmid's magnum opus, very scarce in the original boards. Schmid (1720-1805) was a councillor of the Saxe-Weimar ducal court, and in contact with many of the leading philosophes, including Voltaire, Diderot and d'Alembert. His economic writings were heavily influenced by physiocratic ideas, promoting agriculture as the basis of the nation's wealth and criticising luxury. These physiocratic ideas are evident in this, his key publication, an interesting and wide-ranging work. There are sections discussing population (Schmid advocates a continuous increase, denying that it would outrun the means of subsistence); domestic society (he maintains that divorce is sanctioned by natural law and that polygamy favours a healthy multiplication of the species); property (he defends private ownership of land, rejecting communism as a monastic idea contrary to the order of nature); luxury (inequality of wealth is just and necessary to national prosperity, but luxury of consumption should be eradicated - though by the influence of public opinion and not by sumptuary laws); taxation (Schmid favours direct over indirect taxation); commerce (external trade is not a source of real wealth, and, to the extent that it is necessary, the balance of trade should be kept in exact equilibrium); and war (he proposes a European confederation to guarantee peace). Schmid's conclusion is that the sources of public welfare are property, liberty and security. Einaudi A.867; INED 4116; Mattioli 3269; not in Goldsmiths or Kress. 2 volumes, octavo. Uncut in original paper boards. Housed in a dark blue cloth flat-back box by the Chelsea Bindery. Neat contemporary signature to half-title of vol. I. Minor edge wear and splits to joints but bindings fresh, small sticker to spine of vol. I, some worming to second volume at rear through board, contents with a few instances of browning and foxing, generally light, a few leaves with peripheral short closed tears, notwithstanding an excellent copy.
