Bartolomeo Gavanto, was known as the father of liturgy at the service of popes Clement VIII e Urbanus VIII (to whom this book is dedicated). Title printed in red and black.

Five volumes of Gavanto's chief workThesaurus Sacrorum Rituum. With three vignette illustrations of altars and rituals to volume I. Collated, complete. Batolommeo Gavanto was an Italian Barnabite priest and liturgist who dedicated himself to liturgical studies. He was known in Rome for having the most accurate knowledge of the sacred rites. The text was originally published in 1628 and traces the history and origin of the sacred rites. Gavanto discusses their mystical significance and provides rules as to the observance and obligation of the rubrics. He explains the subject matter of the work which was dedicated to his patron, Pope Urban. In a half marbled calf binding with paper-covered boards. Externally, smart with rubbing to the head and tail of spines and to joints. Small loss to the head of spines to volumes V and III. Prior owner's signature to recto of front endpaper, Herbert J Wood dated December 11th, 1865. Volume V is lacking the gilt-stamped title to spine label. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with the odd spot throughout. Very Good Indeed. book.
