He left New York City on the steamer Crescent City in March 1849, crossed the Isthmus of Panama, took the brig Sylph to San Francisco, and arrived in late July. During his stay in California, he mined at Hawkins' Bar and Sullivan's Creek between August 1849 and March 1850; the Mariposa mines from April to July 1850; Horse Shoe Bar on the American River from May to September 1851; and Secret Ravine from October to June 1852. Other locations mined by Gardiner from 1852 until his return home in 1857 included Swett's Bar, Indian Bar, Chambers' Bar, and Belvidere Flat. He also wrote in some detail about his visits to San Francisco and Stockton. This copy was presented as a keepsake for the 1994 Joint Meeting of the Zamorano & Roxburghe Clubs, with a finely printed presentation leaf affixed to the front flyleaf. Quarto. First Edition
First edition. First edition. Red cloth, 390pp., illustrations, extensive notes, index. Two maps (large folding map at rear). Lengthy introduction by the editor, Dale L. Morgan. Morgan's introduction presents a nearly complete bibliography of California gold rush reminiscences, and thus is a fine guide to first-hand accounts of early California experience. An interesting narrative of life in and around the California gold camps, complemented by Morgan's introduction. "In addition to reprinting Gardiner's work, Morgan compiled a substantial introduction consisting of a bibliographic essay on the northern mines and correspondence concerning the original publication of the reminiscences. Gardiner rounded the Horn in 1849. The narrative is pleasantly readable with the color of mining life and surroundings painted on the business-like outlines of actual mining. Gardiner mined at Hawkins' Bar and Sullivan's Creek between August 1849 and March 1850; the Mariposa mines from April to July 1850; Horse Shoe Bar on the American River from May to September 1851; and Secret Ravine from October to June 1852. Other locations mined by Gardiner from 1852 until his return home in 1857 included Swett's Bar, Indian Bar, Chambers' Bar, and Belvidere Flat. He also wrote in some detail about his visits to San Francisco and Stockton. Particularly interesting are the recitations of his activities in the San Francisco supply trade, which fed and clothed those bound for the gold fields."---Eloquence From A Silent World, #62. "If those who read Howard Gardiner's account of his experiences in California between 1849 and 1857 will thereafter return to this summary survey, they will be impressed with the immense solidity of his narrative, and the large extent of the canvas on which he has worked. I think it is quite clear that nothing in the existing literature compares with his reminiscences." - Dale Morgan. In addition to reprinting Gardiner's work, Morgan compiled a substantial introduction consisting of a bibliographic essay on the northern mines and correspondence concerning the original publication of the reminiscences. Gardiner rounded the Horn in 1849. The narrative is pleasantly readable with the color of mining life and surroundings painted on the business-like outlines of actual mining. Particularly interesting are the recitations of his activities in the San Francisco supply trade, which fed and clothed those bound for the gold fields. Saunders 62.

First trade edition, first issue in the red cloth binding. Edited by Dale L. Morgan. Quarto. lxv, [1], 390pp. Frontispiece, seven illustrations, 2 maps (one folding). Red cloth, gilt. A fine copy. Designed and printed by Lawton Kennedy. Detailed reminiscences of a "Forty Niner." Contains interesting observations on life in San Francisco and in the mines. Gardiner came to California via Panama and remained for eight years. Morgan's 65 page introduction provides an extremely comprehensive survey of the entire literature of Gold Ruhs reminiscences, discussing in detail every such work published from 1860 to the present day, making clear why Gardiner's narrative stands "in the very first rank" of this literature.
