Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. This copy is bound in peacock blue cloth covered boards with bright gilt decoration and titling to the spine. There is a small mark to the f.e.p. otherise the texr block is bright and tight. There is some mild edge wear to the price clipped dust wrapper. The advertisement fo the world's first luxury cruise in 1867 made just the right appeal to social climbers. It had an endorsement from General Sherman who was to be on board, and it cautioned: "Applications to join the party (now nearly complete the number being limited to 110) must be made to the committee . . ." many distinguished people were to be of the party and the cost of the journey assured that only therich need apply. not only were they to be rich, but they were to be pious. A trip to the Holy Land conducted by Henry Ward beecher himself was to be part of the five-month jaunt. but the illustrious passenger list dwindled - neither Sherman of Beecher, nor any of the other "society" names sailed, and the selectivity of the list was abandoned in favour of anyone with the wherewithal. As it happened, the only notable passenger on the 'Quaker City' was neither rich nor pious. He was mark twain, on board as a correspondent for the San Francisco Alta california and his experiences en route were to become material for 'The Innocents Abroad'. Dewey ganzel reconstructs the actual voyage in a manner truly worthy of Mark Twain, using passenger's correspondence, newspaper accounts, the Captain's logbook and a number of Clemens' unpublished manuscripts, particularly his notebook diary.
