First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. First Edition. Two volume set: first printing of Volume I: Southwestern Enterprises, 1840-1847); second printing of Volume II: Excursions in Mexico & California, 1847-1850. The volumes were issued separately and in limited quantities during World War II, and the combination offered here (first printing of I with second printing of II) was the way the set was first issued in uniform bindings. Both volumes in fine condition, in original dust jackets, which have some rubbing, scratches, and small chips and tears. Together they form the seventh volume of the publisher's American Exploration and Travel series. As described on the jacket, the text was "compiled from the hitherto unknown diary and from letters, many of them little known, which Maurice Garland Fulton procured from Gregg's own descendants. The first book chronicles the period from his Gregg's retirement from the Santa Fe trade in 1840 through his experiences in the East, on the plains, in Texas, and with the army in the Mexican War to the very eve of the Battle of Buena Vista, in 1847. Book II continues his career from that point until the eve of his last enterprise prior to his death in California in 1850.".
