/Wm. Hofman, illustrator. (illustrator). CONDITION: Near Fine in Good Plus jacket; very edgeworn jacket; unclipped 2.75. Juvenile hardback. A malicious rumor spread by a white outlaw caused the local Ute band to threaten Ward and his father's new farm. Ward's friendship with Chief Ouray and a boy named Antelope partially averted the Ute uprising. Perhaps a fictional incident, but realistic. Chief Ouray, (1833-1880) a remarkable diplomatic leader, tried relentlessly to ease the transition as white settlers moved into Ute territory in Colorado, but ultimately failed. /Loretta and Prentice Phillips, illustrators. (illustrator). CONDITION: Very Good without jacket, no names or other marks, light foxing top edge, faded spine, spine ends and top corners lightly rubbed. Juvenile hardback. "The true story of Monte, a fascinating grizzly bear. He was found as a cub by a kind miner who lived with a companion, and he learned to love and trust Dick and Jim. But trouble piled up fast when a movie company hears of Monte's intelligence, playfulness and humor, and forces Dick and Jim to do what they can to get Monte back to the Rockies. They set him free and try to keep the movie scouts from his trail and from then it is a battle of wits between Monte and the men. How Monte won out, not only for himself but for his mate and finally his own cubs, makes for some appealing animal lore. Wonderful woodland feeling and charming choice of detail in this intimate life of a grizzly." Kirkus Great book! ABE Heritage Seller since 1996; conservative AB condition grading.
