Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - unbeschnitten, altersgemäß sehr guter Zustand / uncut, very good condition for age - PREFACE -- The aim of this edition is twofold : first, to provide an authoritative text of the poetical works of Sir Thomas Wiat; and, secondly, to vindicate his important position in respect of his achievements in verse, his connection with contemporary continental thought and poetical aspirations, and the wide influence he exerted upon the poets of his day - an influence which extended into the Elizabethan age. -- The obscurity under which much of Wiat s achievement has remained for over three and a half centuries is mainly due to the coupling of his name with that of the Earl of Surrey, a poet who was not only his junior by a generation (as time was then reckoned), but who only began to write, as an ardent admirer and disciple of Wiat, when his master had reached maturity. -- Contemporary critics placed Surrey first, in deference to his rank; later ages looked upon him as the superior poet. The Scotch reviewers, criticizing Nott s edition of Wiat, 1815-6, went so far as to declare that Wiat was a diplomatist and a man of wit, but no poet.
