DJ is price clipped and has some wear, soiling, tears and chips. Ink notes inside the fep. Slightly cocked. Joseph Durso was a sports writer who worked for The New York Times for 51 years and wrote many books on sports history. Durso regularly covered the Mets, the Yankees and the Kentucky Derby. In his last decade, he also wrote on thoroughbred racing. In 1995, he was recognized by the Baseball Writers Association of America for his contributions to baseball writing with its J.G. Taylor Spink Award. He is among the writers and broadcasters honored at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. Derived from a Kirkus review: The Carvel kids, Mickey and Whitey, remember what it was like to play for the winningest Yankees ever. Whitey remembers Mickey as a dirt-poor country hick from Oklahoma; Mickey remembers Whitey as New York Slick. Helped along by Durso, veteran New York Times reporter, they replay the extended joyride that was the Yanks in the 1950s. Mickey began to learn about Countess Mara ties and $400 suits. And booze was a big part of their notorious "horsing around"--which after Namath and Ali sounds about as wild as a boy scouts' weenie roast. Still, they got a reputation for high living and like a couple of aging adolescents they're proud of it. As to the game, Whitey says, "I could tell you just about every pitch I threw in those 3,170 innings"--and Mickey could describe every one of the 536 HRs. But then, they're modest fellas, so they spare you. Yankee die-hards will read it. Sic transit gloria.

Boards & Cloth with Dustjacket. First Edition. SIGNED BY WHITEY FORD AND MICKEY MANTLE. Joint autobiography of the two great New York Yankee teammates and friends. 24pgs. of photos. Laid in the book is a nice color reprint postcard of Mantle. There is a faint approx. 2" damp stain to the front edge of the book, which happily has not marred the interior of the book and a tiny chip to the very top of the spine panel of the dj. Very scarce to find a copy of this book signed by both players. Vg+/fine. Book.
