12mo. 3.5 x 5.5 inches. [viii] + 141 + [1] pp. + [1] pp. publisher's advertisements. Title page in red and black. A half title may have been removed by the binder. Bound in contemporary full calf with gilt borders; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt. Red edges, some wear to extremities, traces of foxing and two margin tears, neatly repaired; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by engraved frontispiece. Decorated by title page, head and tailpiece vignettes and by initials. The main text of the Epitome Rerum Romanorum, or Epitome of Roman History, is usually ascribed to Lucius Annaeus Florus (c.74?-130?), possibly an historian from Africa who flourished during the reigns of Trajan and Hadrian. It provides a summary, written in a somewhat rhetorical style, of Roman history to the reign of Augustus, partly based on Livy, and was popular as a text book at the time this edition was published. Included also is the text of the Liber Memorialis of Lucius Ampelius. This very concise universal history to the time of Trajan probably written before 224 is added here after the index. It includes the first mention of the Pergamon Altar, now in Berlin, in the Miracula Mundi chapter. This school text was published by Tonson and Watts, 1713-19 in their duodecimo series of classics, several of which were edited by Michael Maittaire (c.1767-1747), classical scholar and school teacher. A Huguenot who settled in England, he was educated at Westminster School, from 1682, where he received a good grounding in Greek and Latin, and later at Oxford. He published an English Grammar in 1712 and tutored Stanhope, the son of Lord Chesterfield. (ESTC T146535). CLASSICS ROMAN CLASSICS HISTORY ANCIENT 17TH CENTURY LATIN ILLUSTRATED CLASSICS.
