The author, Susan Branch Bradford Eppes (1848-1942), was born and reared at the Pine Hill Plantation in Leon County, Florida. In this companion piece to her previous book, The Negro of the Old South, she provides a personal memoir describing the years 1850 and 1866 which draws heavily on the diary which she kept through those years. Condition: Very Good binding. 8vo. in the publisher's blue cloth binding with titling in gilt; [x], 11-378 pages; both hinges are cracked but holding; with a pencilled authorial inscription on the endpaper: "To | My precious Chum | who has scattered there | Roses of Pleasure | so plentifully along | my pathway | with the Author's | unspeakable love". ~~The Nevins bibliography tells us that Mrs. Eppes' book described "Life on a Florida plantation . in memoirs and a diary" and that "the latter paints a vivid picture of social and economic conditions" [Nevins II, 189].~~This copy not only with the intriguing inscription but with a laid in handbill or off-print, approximately 8 1/2" x 11: "A Lady Sums up Gov. Broward" -- "Behind a Dullard's Face He Hides a Crafty, Scheming Brain." A Scathing Denunciation by an Educated Woman"; a bifold leaf printed in three columns, with a couple of short closed tears; in which Mrs. Eppes accuses Governor Broward inaction regarding the murder of her husband Nicholas Eppes in 1904; the offprint was "Taken from the Santa Rosa Record, of Milton, Fla., May 7, 1908"; while several black man were convicted, and one executed, the Eppes family was convinced that he was murdered because of his knowledge of political corruption in Florida.~~ (Nevins II, 189). Very Good binding.
