First ed.; 42 p., clean and unmarked; gray-blue boards with beige spine and label giving title information show minimum shelf wear; frontis. is reproduction of portrait of Joseph Reed painted by James Peale, with tissue guard; this lovely little volume would be pristine except for age-toning of paper, which is otherwise strong and of fine quality; no d.j.; Reed fought in the War for Independence, designed the Evergreen Tree of Liberty flag, signed the Articles of Confederation, and was--under another more elaborate title--the first governor of Pennsylvania.

Also includes Roll of Honor of Yale Men in the Civil War, Roll of Service, and Index to Roll of Service. Ellsworth Eliot, Jr. was born June 6, 1864, the son of Ellsworth Eliot (P&S, 1852) and his wife, Anna Stone Eliot. He was raised in Guilford, CT, and New York City and was graduated from Yale. He received his M.D. in 1887 from the College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) where he was head of his class and winner of the Harsen Prize. Mostly this study is "a service roll of Yale men" but also includes a "brief account of college life at the outbreak of the war" [Nevins II, 148]. This also has a chapter on prisoners of war The class reports compiled and edited by class secretaries have been the best source of information for this book. They contain statistical matter, frequently with short biographical sketches of the graduates.
