Book
Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos, Maps (illustrator). 1st. This was probably the first book devoted to the early phases of exploration in New Zeraland and the contribution these ventures made to the wider settlement of New Zealand, particularly the interior parts of the country. The explorers not only were surveyors ,engineers and other trained professsionals but were also adventures, working in areas where few, if any, Europeans had previously ventured. Mapping of NZ's many mountain ranges was prominant in the work they carried out while they also located land suitable for agriculture and settlements, made geological discoveries, plotted roads, tracks and gold mining locations. The author, then Professor of History at Otago University, in addition to biographically detailing the most notable of these early explorers and their NZ travels has also told of the part played by sealers and whalers, missionaries and scientists in recording the territorial characteristics of NZ in its earliest stages of European settlement, up to and beyond the 1860s. An impressive book not only for its record of early explorations and explorers. but also for its accounts of remote areas of NZ as witnessed by these intrepid and resourceful men. First edition from Blackie and Son of 1929, 120 pages plus bibliography, illustrated with dual-portrait frontis, four other portraits and and five full page photos of notable NZ scenic features, NZ maps to end-papers. Blue hard covers with light brown front titles and small, centred. decoration of mountain scene are VG+. Black spine titles and a small decoration are on a light grey fabric spine strip. Few faint and unobtrusive marks on title page, text block otherwise excellent. The VG light gray DJ has colour painting of mountain scene applied centre front panel, few short tears near spine top, also at lowe spine. with small adhesion mark on back panel. The jacket flaps are spot glued to the front and rear end-papers.
