Owner's name penned on front flies of both volumes, school reference stamp and Milton Offutt's decorative bookplate on pastedown in volume one only, spine and edges a bit worn, corners bumped, very good lacking the dustwrappers. Milton Offutt was a professor at Johns Hopkins University and the author of *The Protection of Citizens Abroad by the Armed Forces of the United States* published in 1928. A selection of letters between Charles Francis Adams, Sr. and his son Henry, who are on diplomatic post in London during the American Civil War, and Charles Francis Adams, Jr., a union cavalry officer back in the states. The senior Adams is the son of President John Quincy and grandson of President John Adams.

In addition, Vol. 1 bears a long gift inscription to Mrs. Harriette Webb Crawford signed W. Seward Webb; Volumes 2 and 3 bear a shorter version of this inscription, all signed by W. Seward Webb, Park Ave., New York. Also included is a Webb family photograph ca. 1910 with most of the members identified. Volumes 1 and 2 published 1893, Vol. 3 published 1894; all 3 volumes with engraved portrait frontispiece. A very scarce association set in unusually fine condition.
