Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First Edition. 248 Pages. Previous owner's name on front endpaper and faded spine. No other marks and interior text pages are bright, tight, and white. For many years my mother regularly kept a diary in which she recorded matters of public and domestic interest, the comings and goings of her family and friends, appreciation of people and of books, and often very caustic criticism of both. But she kept also a more intermittent and far more private chronicle, contained in half a dozen casual notebooks of various shapes and sizes, the earliest of which deals with her childhood, and was written some years later. She was married at the age of eighteen, and with her married life the account becomes contemporary with what it records. There are gaps in it, some of which extend over many years, and it deals entirely with intimate and personal affairs. She tabulates certain rules of life which she set up for herself with regard to her devotions, her exercise, and so forth, but it is chiefly concerned with the problems, the darknesses and illuminations, which came to her soul. I brought these little books down here one spring, and, reading and re-reading them, learned more than I had ever known about her joys and sadnesses, her fears and her courage. Much therein was too private ever to be published; of the rest I have made considerable use. Should any reader think that I have exceeded the limits of due discretion, my excuse must be that I believed it could only benefit him to learn something of the inner history of a life so beautiful as hers. Three Illustrations Mary Benson Aged 75 Frontispiece, Mary Benson Aged 19, and Mary Benson Aged 30.
